Presentation for the Engineering and Planning Teams, City of Nelson, British Columbia, Canada, April 2012

Our principal, Donna, shared the municipal process in the research and development of the booklet called the Universal Design Guidelines for Outdoor Spaces:  Plan and Design for Choice with the Engineering and Planning Departments for the City of Nelson.  A historical review of the equitable model of Universal Design was presented together with applied and practical, accessible solutions for the design of crosswalks at major intersections, midpoint crosswalks.  Topics covered included addressing accessibility and design for snow and hill terrains, the design of multi-use pathways on hills and their safe use by people using scooters, wheelchairs and bicycles, the design of inclusive play spaces, and the design of parking lots addressing snow storage and safe accessibility travel corridors.  Human factors were discussed relative to pedestrian interaction with the automobile, and the activity of crossing a street from a curb ramp.

Emphasize was placed on health, safety, consistency and education as well as the need for professionals, that include planners and designers, to have in hand the Canadian Standards Association design guidelines entitled Accessible Design for the Built Environment (B651-04), recent editions of the BC Building Code, and copies of the The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  Please be advised the ADA has had recent revisions as at 2010 and your copies should be updated.
