Rick Hansen, UBC, March 10 2010

Our Designs Inc. attended at the University of British Columbia to say hello to a friend, Rick Hansen, on March 10, 2010.   Inspired by the same dream as the principal of Our Designs Inc., Rick wants to see a world accessible and inclusive for all.  Rick set out on his legendary Man in Motion World Tour, on March 21, 1985, raising $26 million for Spinal Chord Injuries research.  More importantly was the collective shift in consciousness in the belief of the potential of people with disabilities when barriers are removed.  Donna Rodman helped with this difference through applying her knowledge to improve single family and multifamily housing designs, she presented all over North America on the paradigm of Universal Design, wrote her Masters thesis on the design of the universal play space, and wrote a booklet on the Universal Design Guidelines for Outdoor Spaces for the communities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.  The booklet was funded by Measuring Up 2010 Legacies Now as part of the Olympic and Para Olympic legacies of our Canada’s 2010 Olympics.

Donna spent time in 1993 to 1998 testing out Sunbird sailboats donated by Rick Hansen to the Disabled Sailing Association at the sailing center at Jericho Beach.  She would be found out in the middle of English Bay in Vancouver, on weekends, testing the boats for tipping and for safety so that they could be used by sailors with disabilities using sip and puff technologies.  Often, Donna would sit in the stern while sailors enjoyed the freedom of sailing.  She helped too with the accommodation arrangements for the Mobility Cup competitions for sailors in 1998.

Rick has known Donna over many years through her lectures in North America, her ideas on ability and art, her work at the University of British Columbia for building reviews and upgrades of over 50 buildings on campus for students with disabilities, and her recent publication for 2010 Legacies Now.  The booklet can be found on this website under Articles and News, Publications.

Thank you Rick for being such an inspiration to everyone and helping others succeed who share your dreams.
